Equal: the default worth questioning
Right when incomes and rooms are similar. The calculator keeps it one tap away so you can compare it against the alternatives instead of assuming it.
By income: the couples' standard
Each person pays the same fraction of their income. Earn 60% of the household's money, pay 60% of the rent. Incomes are processed in your browser only; there is no server to see them.
By room: custom weights
Give the big room weight 3 and the small one weight 2, or fold in the en-suite, the balcony, the street noise. Any weighting the household agrees on becomes exact-cent shares that reconcile to the full rent.
Equal or by income — which is fair?
Both are defensible; they encode different ideas of fairness. Equal treats the flat as the unit; income-proportional treats the burden as the unit. Run both and let the household choose knowingly.
How does income-based splitting work?
Each person pays the same share of rent as their share of the combined income, computed in exact cents with the comparison to an equal split shown alongside.
